Windows Media Player needs no introduction to anyone who has ever used Windows Operating System. Despite its recent decline in use even after it comes pre-installed in Windows Operating System many people still prefer it over other players like VLC or K-Lite. Windows Media Player is a media player and media library application developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system, as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile–based devices. Editions of Windows Media Player were also released for Mac OS,Mac OS X and Solaris but development of these has since been discontinued. The Player runs offline but if you are online it will provide some extra features.

Features :

Windows Media Player allows you to toggle between two modes : the Player Library, which gives you comprehensive control over the Player's many features; and Now Playing mode, which gives you a simplified view of your media that's ideal for playback.

The player integrates web-browsing support to browse online music stores, shop for music and tune to internet radio stations since version 7. It provides an embeddedable ActiveX control for Internet Explorer so that developers can play Windows Media on web pages.

Windows Media Player 10 and later feature integration with a large number of online music stores and selecting a music store switches the Info Center view, radio and other online features to use services from that store. Purchased music from a particular store appears in a separate library node under the respective category.

In Now Playing mode, you can view DVDs and videos or see what music is currently playing. You can decide to view only the currently playing item, or you can right-click the Player, and then click Show list to view a selection of available items.

You can add music to the Player Library by using your computer's CD drive to copy CDs and store them on your computer as digital files. This process is known as ripping.

Its not only a media player it can also be used to burn media files in DVD's or CD's.
