First of all we should understand what is a URL shortener. Many of you would know that the sites which shorten your URL under their domain. Interesting part is that goo.gl is used to see how many clicks have been done on your links and it doesn' t give you a single penny. While some other shorteners like shorte.st are paying in dollars. So, what is the difference. For understanding the difference we have to understand what is the mechanism of paying URL shorteners.

How does the paying URL shorteners work :

The paying URL shorteners take advertisements from other companies and take a sum from the company. Now when you shorten the links  the URL shortening company puts advertisement to your link. When the people cilck on the link they are forced to stay a few seconds on the advertisement before they can skip the advertisement. So the users see the ad and the company whose ad is being shown pays the URL shortening company according to the rate. If we see that a 1000 pageviews are done for a particular link then it earns a sum, say $10 per 1000 pageviews. So now URL shortening company will pay you a part of the income, say $5 and keep the rest. So this, is how the URL shorteners make money.

So now you understand that goo.gl doesn't pay out because it does not put ads like other paying URL shorteners.

Different purposes for which URL shorteners are used :

1. Most major use is for making money.
2. To see how many clicks have been done on a single link.
3. In sites like Twitter there is a very less scope of writing and if you write a link like "http://uniquedsoftware.blogspot.in/p/blog-page_29.html" it will take away a very lage space. So, URL shorteners are used to shorten the links like "http://goo.gl/MLNzYr".
